Terrace Edge Waipara Valley Classic Riesling 2013

25-Mar-2016
The Chapman family of Terrace Edge Vineyard in the Waipara Valley see Riesling as their pre-eminent white variety.  It is arguably the most successful white of the district, and the Terrace Edge bottlings figure among the region’s best.  While there are three styles of Riesling made at Terrace Edge, it is the off-dry ‘Classic’ that is the mainstay of the brand.  Pete Chapman takes the greatest care in the vineyard to ensure that the fruit is in premium condition and exactly within the desired parameters to be made into their wine at the nearby Muddy Water facilities.  I’ve rated the previous two vintages 2012 and 2011 both 5-stars.  The Chapmans report that the 2013 growing season was perfect.  It was a warm and very dry growing season, and the wines show the resultant richness.  It is an expression which highlights ripeness and unctuousness and is stylistically very similar to many other successful wines in the district.  An alternative path is to pick earlier to enhance the acidity and freshness of the variety, this being workable as long as the flavours and phenolics are sufficiently ripe.  Here is my review.  www.terraceedge.co.nz
