Terrace Edge Waipara Syrah 2015

28-Jul-2016
The Chapman family of Terrace Edge is one of a number of producers who are achieving significant success with Syrah in the Waipara Valley. The wine has quickly gained acceptance and is regarded as highly as their Rieslings, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. The MS and ‘Stonecroft’ clones are planted in two blocks, with 1.3 ha on the main level terrace, and 600 plants forming 0.3 ha on the 45° ‘Roasted Slope’ or ‘Bank Block’ north-facing terrace edge. The Chapman have recently put in Viognier, and no doubt there will be experiments with co-fermentation in the future. Here, I review the new release 2015 vintage Syrah, highly anticipated as the vintage is excellent and also as there was none produced in the 2014 vintage due to the rains. However, the quantities of the 2015 are limited due to early season frosts reducing the yields. www.terraceedge.co.nz
