Terrace Edge Waipara Syrah 2012

17-Jul-2013
While it is generally accepted that Syrah has found its home in the North Island, the argument for the variety’s success in the South Island is growing stronger every vintage. Much depends on the vintage, but site selection also plays a major role. The Waipara Valley is beginning to prove that top flight Syrah can be grown there, and among those that are making a strong case is the Chapman family of Terrace Edge on Georges Road. The Chapmans have Syrah planted on two sites in their vineyard, one on the flat upper terrace, and 0.6 ha on the ‘Bank Block’ a steep 45° north-facing sheltered slope. The combination of fruit gives the resultant wine elegance as well as power. Here I review the 2012 vintage release. www.terraceedge.co.nz
