Terrace Edge Pinot Gris 2012 and Syrah 2011

05-Mar-2013

These two new releases from the Chapman family on Georges Road in the Waipara Valley signal the winemaker handover from Belinda Gould to Dominic Maxwell as the contracted winemaker for the Terrace Edge wines. There will be differences in style for sure. But the vineyard consistency and growing maturity as well as the vintage conditions will no doubt play the dominant role in their expressions. If one were to venture a possible distinction between the styles of the two winemakers, I might suggest that Belinda Gould's wines might be more textural and immediately complex through in-built funkiness, especially in the reds. Dom Maxwells' wines might be more pure and fruit-driven, and possibly refined. The differences are less apparent in the white wines to me, and the opulent style of the Riesling and Pinot Gris wines may be a function of the vineyard site, as well as preferred style by the Chapmans. Whatever the reasons and results, it is intriguing to taste, and pleasing to know that the quality is high regardless. www.terraceedge.co.nz
