Terrace Edge is a boutique vineyard and olive grove situated on the south bank of the Waipara river, North Canterbury. Bruce and Jill Chapman purchased the property, part of an established sheep farm, in 1999 and developed it, planting 12 hectares of vines and 2000 olive trees. After supplying contract fruit, he first vintage of Terrace Edge wines was 2005.

The varietals planted are Riesling, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Syrah. In 2013 Albarino and St Laurent were added. Viticulture is managed by son Peter. The wines were initially made by Belinda Gould of the Muddy Water winery. Dom Maxwell became the winemaker from 2011 vintage following the sale of Muddy Water to Greystone.  The wines are now made by Gavin Tait at the Muddy Water facility. Terrace Edge is committed to the ‘Greening Waipara' project which aims to increase biological diversity. Terrace Edged gained BioGro organic certification in March 2014.  www.terraceedge.co.nz

  Bright, pale straw-yellow with some depth, even colour throughout. This wine has a vibrant bouquet and is presented elegantly, aromas of yellow stonefruit, pear entwined with dusty spice and floral fragrant. Medium-bodied, dry to taste, concentrated palate packed with yellow nectarine, pineapple and Meyer lemon, a layer of floral linger over spices. Mouthwatering acidity injected liveliness on the palate; subtle dusty phenolics adorned the mouthfeel with a textured line and a savoury element to the finish. This vibrant Albarino is packed with succulent ripe yellow fruit, floral, and a fine-textured palate. Match with fish tacos and steamed shellfish over the next 3-5 years.   Bright, even, pale yellow colour throughout. The nose is softly full, elegantly presented, aromas of citrus, apple and stonefruit melded with lime flower and zest. Medium-bodied, off-dry to taste, citrus leads with good energy, entwined with stonefruit, yellow apple and a hint of citrus zest, apple skin element; citrus flower lingers to a lifted, lightly floral closing. A touch of sweetness balanced the zesty acid line, persists on the palate with lightly chalky, fine-textured phenolics. The flavours are well-proportioned and harmonious, leaving a moreish, dry, refreshing finish. Match with pork & sage sausages and white fish over the next 5+ years.   Bright, even pale-yellow with a slightly green hue. The bouquet is delicate and soft, with depth, aromas of apple, entwined with floral and citrus, and a suggestion of honey. Medium-bodied, medium sweetness to taste, the palate is packed with harmonious flavours of toffee apple, citrus, elderflower; honeycomb and spice broaden the dimension and depth of flavour, linger to a flavoursome, dry finish. Reminiscent of apple skins adorn by minerals, leaving an elegant texture. Sweetness enhances the richness and mouthfeel, harmonises the acid tension. This is a consistently excellent medium style Riesling with harmonious flavours and depth, perfectly balanced and moreish.   Bright, pale-straw yellow with some depth. The bouquet is fresh and softly penetrating crunchy apple and pear interweave a layer of delicate spice and floral fragrances. Medium-full bodied, off-dry to taste, the palate is plush, filled with baked pear, toffee apple aromas, unfolding ginger, cardamom and white floral. Fine-textured phenolic left an elegant, silky mouthfeel, along with an oily, plush flow, carry flavour richness to a lingering, savoury finish. This is a textural Pinot Gris with concentrated baked pear and toffee apple, balanced acidity on a fleshy palate.   Bright, medium salmon-pink with an orange hue, lighter edged. The nose is softly-full with nuances of red berries, strawberries, cherries and quince interweave deep fragrance of rose petals along with a fine dusting of spices. Medium-full bodied, the palate has breadth, penetrating an amalgam of savoury red fruit along with quince form a concentrated core. Subtle spices unveiled along with rose petals, linger to an elegant, crisp, peppery finish. The fruit has good concentration and depth, supported by fresh acidity. A fine layer of phenolic composes an elegant, light texture coating, rounded by the creamy palate. This is rosé with the richness of savoury red fruit, rose petals and spices on a crisp palate with a touch of creaminess. Match with beef carpaccio and charcuterie over the next 3 years.   Dark, deep, black-hued purple-red colour, lighter on the rime, very youthful in appearance. The nose is fresh, full and voluminous with ripe and plush, primary fruit aromas of dark-red and blue berried fruits along with an intriguing amalgam of violet florals, game notes, spices and subtle game suggestions. Medium-bodied, the palate has sweetly rich and succulent primary fruit flavours of dark-red and blueberries, alongside violet florals, jam and savoury spices. The fruit is supported by fine-grained, supple tannins and integrated acidity lending a soft, accessible mouthfeel. The flavours carry through to a plush finish with blueberry jam and violet notes. This is an up-front, crowd-pleasing, sweetly ripe St Laurent with flavours of dark-red and blueberry fruit along with jam, herb and violet notes, on a very accessible palate. Match with wild pork and game meat dishes, and Middle Eastern fare over the next 4+ years.   Deep, ruby-black with some depth and transparency, lighter ruby-purple on edge. The nose is fragrantly full, nuances of dark herbs, floral and smoke entwined with blackberries, roasted meat and peppercorns. Full-bodied, blackberries and plums have a concentrated core, along with violet, thyme, black peppercorns; savoury nuances coated the palate, unfolding smoke meat and broody dark fruit. The mouthfeel is dense, woven by fine-grained, powdery tannin; savouriness broadens the palate and lengthens the finish, interweave lacy acidity brings a sustained, long finish. This is a rich palate Syrah with blackberries in the lead of a complexing, savoury profile and powdery tannin mouthfeel. Match with roasted lamb and slow-cooked boar over the next 5+ years.   Medium deep ruby-red, lighter on the rim. This wine has an enticing, broody bouquet slowly growing in volume, dark herbs, earthy soil interweave black cherries, Doris plums along with black pepper and cinnamon. Medium-bodied, the palate is concentrated with the richness of dried thyme, lavender and liquorice, underlined black cherries and plums enriched by black pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg and savoury earth element. Dark and broody aromas throughout the palate enliven by balancing lacy acidity; supple, velvety tannins lined a soft grip, directed a long, dry finish. This is an elegantly rich, broody Pinot Noir with dark fruit, herbaceous details and a velvety mouthfeel. Match with lamb rack and hare over the next 5-7 years.
