Terrace Edge Waipara Valley Albarino 2016Other White from New Zealand - Canterbury & WaiparaReview Date : 20-Sep-2016☆☆☆☆☆Bright, light golden-hued straw colour, lighter edged. This has a moderately full and gently concentrated nose of ripe citrus fruit and tropical fruits, yellow stonefruits, pineapple and subtle nutty suggestions. The aromatics build in depth and open in volume with aeration. Dry to taste and medium-full bodied, the palate features a softly concentrated and deep core of rich, ripe citrus and tropical fruits with pineapple and exotic florals, and nutty notes. This has weight and presence, the wine following a fine phenolic, textural line, and the palate enlivened by lacy, crisp acidity. This has energy with some underlying power carrying the wine to a long, concentrated finish with some grip and exotic floral and fruit lift. This is a rich and exotic citrus and tropical fruit flavoured dry Albarino with palate presence, light grip and crisp acidity. Match with Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine over the next 3-4 years. Terrace Edge North Canterbury Albarino 2017Other White from New Zealand - Canterbury & WaiparaReview Date : 11-Apr-2018☆☆☆☆☆Bright, light golden-hued yellow colour, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is fresh and elegant with a taut core of white florals and minerals and a touch of salinity. The aromatics show excellent clarity with finesse and building intensity and detail with aeration. Dry to taste and medium-full bodied, the palate has penetrating and vigorous flavours of white florals and white stonefruits, entwined with subtle citrus fruit elements, minerals and nuances of saline. The palate possesses light phenolic textures forming a positive line with balanced acid freshness lending a degree of poise. The flavours carry to an elegant, lingering finish of florals and stonefruits. This is an intense and vibrant dry Albarino with white floral and stonefruit flavours along with minerals and saline notes on a fine-textured palate. Serve with seafood, and with fine Asian fare over the next 3+ years. Terrace Edge Waipara Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2012Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand - Canterbury & WaiparaReview Date : 03-Feb-2013☆☆☆☆☆100% Sauvignon Blanc cool-fermented in stainless-steel to 13.5% alc. and 2 g/L rs, the wine undergoing batonnage over 6 weeks. Bright, very pale straw colour with slight green hues, pale on rim. The nose is softly voluminous with a harmonious amalgam of gooseberry, herb and nettle aromas that reveal tropical fruit elements in the glass. Dry to taste, bold and lively, up-front flavours of gooseberries and nettles are lifted by exotic tropical fruit nuances. The palate is underlined by racy and zesty acidity and well-handled phenolics that form a fine-textured and tight mouthfeel. The flavours are carried by the acid drive to an elegantly proportioned finish with good concentration and moderate length. Terrace Edge Waipara Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2014Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand - Canterbury & WaiparaReview Date : 20-Oct-2014☆☆☆☆☆Right, light straw yellow colour with slight green hues, lighter on rim. The nose is full, soft and broad with up-front aromas of gooseberries, nectarines and greengages harmoniously entwines forming a good core, revealing complexing smoky barrel-ferment nuances with aeration. Dry to taste, the palate features an array of green stonefruit flavours melded with nutty, spicy and smoky oak elements. This has good breadth, depth and weight and the mouthfeel is lively and mouthwatering with bright, racy and slippery acidity guiding the wine along a grainy-textured line. Herb and spice flavours unfold, lifting the dry-textured, acid-cutting finish. This is a weighty and complex oak-influenced Sauvignon Blanc with a racy mouthfeel and dry finish. Terrace Edge Waipara Riesling 2009Riesling from New Zealand - Canterbury & WaiparaReview Date : 14-Feb-2011☆☆☆☆☆Riesling is the specialty white variety for the Chapman family, the variety a proven performer in the region. Winemaker Belinda Gould had the fruit whole cluster pressed and fermented it with native yeasts to 12.5% alc. and 15 g/L rs. Straw yellow with a light golden hue to the colour, the bouquet is intensely rich and lush with honey and tropical fruits alongside lime notes as well as a little reduction. Off-dry to medium in sweetness level, the palate is still tightly bound and shy. However there is excellent depth of citrus fruits, honey and minerals, all on a soft, fine-textured palate. The soft acidity indicates this will be a wine to drink over the next 4-5 years. The palate is kept in excellent focus with fresh acidity, but the honied sweetness adds a touch of decadence to the depth. This has an intense bouquet with voluminous and ethereal aromas of yellow florals, ripe stonefruits and citrus and some honeysuckle elements that build with depth and presence. Medium-dry, rich, near succulent and lush flavours of citrus fruits, florals and honeysuckle form a soft, very fine-textured line and mouthfeel. Fresh acidity provides energy and drive, and the palate is harmonious and complete as it flows to a long and sustained dry finish featuring complex mineral and flint nuances. Bright, light straw-yellow colour, very pale on edge. This has an elegantly proportioned, fine-featured and intense nose of limes and lemon, revealing complex layers of honey with secondary toasty elements in a smooth and integrated, harmonious array. Delicate mouthwatering mineral nuances add detail and thirst-quenching interest. Off-dry to taste and light-bodied, soft and delicate flavours of citrus fruits, white and yellow florals and honied toast are all harmoniously interwoven on the palate. This is smooth flowing with gentle acidity in the background enabling the palate and mouthfeel to grow in unctuousness. The nose is softly concentrated with deep aromas of ripe lime fruit along with white and yellow stonefruits, and an amalgam of yellow florals with mineral elements. The aromatics form a rounded core unfolding an array of citrus fruits. Medium-dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has rich and mouthfilling flavours of ripe citrus fruits and yellow stonefruits with subtle honied and yellow floral flavours along with nuances of lees and minerals. Bright, light golden-straw colour with some depth, pale on rim. This has a very full, layered nose of ethereal exotic florals with limes, honey, apricots and minerals, all expressed with purity. Medium in sweetness, this is a rich and luscious wine showing jasmine florals, honey and citrus fruit flavours forming an excellent, concentrated core with seamless, smooth textures. Fine acidity underlines the palate and balances the residual sugar well, and the wine has good tension and liveliness which leads to a long, densely packed finish that is dryer than expected. The bouquet is tight and restrained, but showing good depth and presence, with a complex amalgam of lime fruit, wet-stone minerals, flint and nuts and a subtle talc botrytis nuance. Medium in sweetness, the palate features discreet flavours of lime fruit, minerals and honeysuckle, which are complexed with delicate, botrytis-musk and toasty elements. The mouthfeel is one of soft concentration and density, suggesting unctuousness. The wine is well-balanced by fine, ripe, lacy acidity which underlines the fruit, providing energy and drive. As the wine flows, yellow floral and honey notes emerge and blossom on the moderately sustained finish. The nose is finely concentrated and delicately detailed with pristine aromas of lime fruit entwined with exotic white and yellow florals, rainwater and suggestions of honeysuckle and talc botrytis. Mineral and wet-stone elements are refreshing and mouthwatering. Medium-sweet and light-bodied, refined and intricate flavours of limes and exotic white florals are interwoven with honey and talc, along with fresh mineral elements. The palate is beautifully balanced and poised, the richness cut by the lacy acidity. This has great precision and poise. The nose is elegant, refined and poised, a little tight and slender in expression initially, but unveiling lime and tangerine aromas with a subtle array of exotic florals, some honeysuckle and musk. The botrytis is subtle and sits at the aromatic heart. Medium-sweet to taste and medium-bodied, the palate is elegant and has a softly packed core with rich flavours of ripe citrus fruits melded with honeysuckle, exotic florals and some botrytis muskiness which adds to the richness endowing some opulence. The fruit is gentle, but builds in richness, concentration and mouthfeel, and is balanced by fine acid cut. The wine flows along a smooth line, leading to a sustained finish. Terrace Edge Waipara Valley Late-Picked Riesling 2011Sweet Wine from New Zealand - Canterbury & WaiparaReview Date : 07-Nov-2012☆☆☆☆☆Hand-picked fruit with 25% of the berries raisined by botrytis, indigenous yeast fermented to 11.0% alc. and 70 g/L rs. Bright, light golden-hued straw-yellow colour, pale on edge. The nose is softly full and gently voluminous with ripe lime fruit aromas harmoniously interwoven with layers of marmalade, raisins and honey, along with flinty minerality. Sweet to taste, gentle, but densely packed flavours of ripe limes, honey, exotic jasmine and apricots unfold in waves of richness. The mouthfeel is weighty, soft and rounded, with the acidity in the background. The flavours build to fill the palate and carry through to a very long and sustained finish showing some alcohol warmth and drive and complex wild honey and mineral notes. This is a soft and gently honied and harmonious sweet Riesling to serve with baked desserts, or to sip on its own on a sunny afternoon. Terrace Edge Waipara Pinot Gris 2009Pinot Gris from New Zealand - Canterbury & WaiparaReview Date : 14-Feb-2011☆☆☆☆☆Made by Belinda Gould, the winemaker at Muddy Water winery, this was whole bunch pressed and fermented with native yeasts in seasoned oak to 14.0% alc., leaving 14.0 g/L rs. Batonnage was employed to add complexity. Light straw-yellow with golden hues to the colour, this has a voluminous, honied nose showing stonefruits and spices, almost late-harvest in style. Off-dry on palate, this has flavours of pineapple with tropical fruits and spiced pears. There is a firm tightness to the mouthfeel, showing good concentration and line. But the flavours are now beginning to become decadent with an opulence. A little alcohol warmth adds to the presence. The nose is soft and initially a little restrained in expression, but growing to show good depth and presence with a core of ripe, dark-red berry and cherry fruit with some raspberry liqueur notes, dark herbs and dark-red florals unfolding a hint of minerals. Medium-full bodied, the palate is rich and vibrant with sweet and spicy flavours of dark-red berry fruits that fill the mouth. The fruit has notes of dark-red plums and liquorice, entwined with florals and mineral elements, forming a deep, well-packed, ripe, rounded heart. The tannin are ripe and the structure balances the fruit sweetness with its extraction and grip. The wine flows positively to a fulsome, sweetly rich, lingering finish. This is a sweetly rich and ripe Pinot Noir with flavours of dark raspberries, with notes of liquorice, plums and dark herbs on a well-balanced and structured palate. The nose is full, rounded and packed with aromas of black fruits, black pepper, ink and liquorice, along with layers of dark herbs, spices and minerals. A touch of reduction is well-integrated with the aromatic amalgam. Full-bodied, this has a rounded mouthfeel with supple tannin textures supporting the softly packed and concentrated flavours of savoury black berry fruits, earthy spices and black pepper. A touch of reduction adds a minerally, charry element. An underlying acid line provides good tension and balancing freshness, and carries the flavours along a fine-grained, but firm, dry finish. Youthful in appearance. The nose is gently full and voluminous, the fruit expression a little restrained, but revealing aromas of ripe blackberry and dark raspberries, with notes of Asian spices, violet florals and black pepper detail. This has excellent vinous presence. Full-bodied, the palate has a finely concentrated, but rich core of vibrant blackberry and dark raspberry fruit, with layers of spices and florals, with black mineral elements. This has sweetness and lusciousness, with suggestions of opulence, but the fruit is a little checked in exuberance. The mouthfeel is refined in texture with ripe fine-grained tannin extraction, and the fruit is enlivened by fresh acidity, providing a fresh, blossoming finish. This is a finely concentrated, rich Syrah with blackberry and raspberry fruit with florals and spices on a fine-grained, fresh palate. The wine is a little shy at present, but will bloom.
