Te Whare Ra 2014 ‘Single Vineyard 5182’ Rieslings and 2013 Pinot Noir

24-Nov-2014
Jason and Anna Flowerday have marked the 35th anniversary of the first plantings at Te Whare Ra by labelling the 2014 vintage releases with the ‘Single Vineyard 5182’ designation. The number 5182 bears special meaning to the Flowerdays, being the vineyard number given by BioGro New Zealand following the organic certification of the original vineyard. The site, planted in 1979, has the oldest plantings in Marlborough, and the organic certification represents the Flowerdays’ sensitive custodianship of the land and the resource of old vines, as well as their 11 years of work to attain the certification status. The future releases of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah wines, from the home vineyard will also bear the ‘SV5182’ moniker. The Flowerdays envisage small parcels of wine from other passionate organic growers made under the Te Whare Ra brand will carry different ‘SV’ numbers. Here, I review the 2014 ‘Single Vineyard 5182’ ‘D’ and ‘M’ Rieslings, and the 2013 Pinot Noir. www.twrwines.co.nz
