Te Kairanga 2016 Whites and Rosé, and 2015 Chardonnay and Pinot Noirs

21-Nov-2016
As one of Martinborough’s largest wine producers, Te Kairanga wines is a flagbearer for the district. The potential of the vineyard established in 1984 on land originally owned by Martinborough’s founding father John Martin was apparent from the start, but the company has been through challenging periods which affected quality. Under Foley Family Wines ownership since 2011 and with the installation of talented and thoughtful winemaker John Kavanagh, supported by the viticultural work of Dave Shepherd, we have seen a step up in quality to that expected for such a significant winery. The ‘Home’ and ‘McLeod’ vineyards on the Martinborough Terrace, the ‘Spring Rock’ vineyard north of Longbush and the ‘Ruakokoputuna’ site south of Te Muna, all totalling just over 100 ha provide quality fruit for excellent blending options.

John has been developing the styles of the wines; the whites are taut and textural, and the Pinot Noirs show clarity of fruit and detailed interest. Here, I review the new 2016 whites and rosé, the 2015 ‘John Martin’ Chardonnay and 2015 Pinot Noirs. John sees these two vintages as being special for Martinborough. I am enjoying the progress made at Te Kairanga. The 2016 whites maintain the taut and dry style that John has instituted, but this vintage shows bright and sweetly aromatic fruit, and I consider them to be the best whites yet. The ‘John Martin’ Chardonnay 2015 is a clear star, and the Pinot Noirs from 2015 show vibrancy, fruitiness, balanced extraction and excellent acidity, the wines showing the appropriate step up in interest with each higher tier. www.tkwine.co.nz
