Te Awanga Estate 2016 Strawberry Blonde Rosé and Pinot Gris

23-Feb-2017
The ‘Te Awanga Estate’ brand has experienced a range of fortunes. Originally established in 1994 as a vineyard to supply contract fruit, it became the home of Kim Crawford Wines in 1997, but this ended with the sale of Kim Crawford Wines in 2003. Rod McDonald resurrected the ‘Te Awanga Estate’ brand in 2010 following the acquisition of the 17 ha coastal vineyard. A cellar door is operated on the site, and the brand encompasses wines that are stylistically elegant, showing fruit clarity and focus, and positive aromatics. Interestingly, while most of the Te Awanga Estate wines come from the specific vineyard, Rod is happy to employ fruit for the wines from other sites, as long as they conform to the definite cooler style. Here, I review the new 2016 ‘Strawberry Blonde Rosé and Pinot Gris. Both show a delicacy of expression with good mouthfeel and presence. www.rmwines.co.nz
