Te Awanga Estate 2016 Pinot Gris, 2015 Chardonnay Lot 2, and One Syrah Hunter 2015

06-Jul-2016
There’s one thing Hawke’s Bay winemaker extraordinaire is not afraid of doing is to trial another bottling of a wine. It shows the classic enthusiasm and inquisitiveness of the best winemakers. Of course, not all winemakers have the resources to bottle small and multiple lots, but Rod, with his Hawke’ Bay Wine Company can do so. The drawback is that the general consumer can get easily confused by such variation, and the lesser consistency of style can be disconcerting. But if quality is maintained at a very high level, the drinker will still have faith in the brands. Here, I review two cooler, fruited-oriented Te Awanga Estate wines, the new 2016 Pinot Gris and a second bottling of the Te Awanga Estate Chardonnay – distinguishable from the first bottling by its 13.5% alc. rather than 13.0%, this second bottling gaining richness with more time before bottling and working with the different acid profile. The special wine reviewed is the limited bottling of the uniquely-styled One Off Hawke’s Bay ’The Syrah Hunter’ 2015a blend of Syrah and Pinot Noir as inspired by the legendary Hunter Valley winemaker Maurice O’Shea. www.rmwines.co.nz
