Te Awanga Estate 2015 Chardonnay and 2014 Syrah

‘Te Awanga Estate’ is Rod McDonald’s brand for more elegant expressions of Hawke’s Bay wine. The wines made under this label are crafted to show the character as resulting from a cooler growing area, the wines showing clarity of expression, fruit focus and positive aromatics. Rod ha the ‘Two Gates’ brand for wines from a warmer growing area, which display richness and structure and have the ability to handle complexing inputs. The wines under the ‘Te Awanga Estate’ brand generally come from the 17 ha coastal vineyard in the Te Awanga area, established in 1994. Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Merlot are grown there, but Rod sources fruit from sites other than this vineyard if it has the desirable characteristics to make the style. Here, I review the new release ‘Te Awanga Estate’ 2015 Chardonnay and 2014 Syrah, the latter wine made from fruit from a vineyard further inland, west of Hastings. www.rmwines.co.nz
