Te Awanga Estate 2013 Merlot Rosé and Gewurztraminer

14-Nov-2013
Rod McDonald’s wine business has made a sudden lead forward in the past few months. Operating out of newly acquired winemaking facilities, he has begun to market his ‘No. 8’, ‘Quarter Acre’, ‘Blanket Hills’ and ‘One Off’ brands with a unified strategy. There seems to be greater attention with the ‘Frizzell’ and ‘Osawa’ brands which he makes, and he has invigorated the ‘Two Gates’ and ‘Te Awanga Estate’ labels. As part of this process, there are two new wines joining the ‘Te Awanga Estate’ portfolio from the 2013 vintage, a Merlot Rosé and a Gewurztraminer. The former is based on fruit from the home coastal vineyards, and the latter from an inland site. Are we seeing the beginnings of movement of a Hawke’s Bay wine juggernaut? I review the new wines here. www.rmwines.co.nz
