Tantalus Estate 2015 and 2014 Waiheke Island Releases

Tantalus Estate on Waiheke Island was established in 2013 by a New Zealand family who have purchased and revitalised an existing vineyard in the Onetangi Valley that was first planted in 1998. The company has Campbell Aitken a director and Carrie Mendel as general manager who have Alex Perez from Argentina, winemaking on Waiheke since 2011, as their winemaker. The 8.1 ha site had 4.5 ha under vine, and this has increased slightly under the new ownership to 4.7 ha. The vineyard is planted to 28% Syrah, 26% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc, 10% Malbec, with 3% each of Pinot Gris and Chardonnay, and 1% Viognier. More plantings are envisaged. The vineyard is tended by viticulturist Chris Ward, assisted by Matai Sutherland. The wines are made solely from estate fruit, mainly on-site with the whites processed at a local facility if necessary. Here I review the 2015 white and 2014 red wines, under both ‘Estate’ and ‘Reserve’ labels. www.tantalus.co.nz
