Sugar Loaf Wines – Marlborough

Sugar Loaf Wines in Marlborough is the winegrowing ‘adventure’ of Kate Acland, established in 2004, Kate then 23 years old. There are a number of ‘Sugar Loaf’ references in the wine world, but Kate named her business after the islands of her Taranaki homeland. A busy mother of three, living in Mt Somers, Canterbury, Kate and her husband run a farm there, but also runs the Marlborough operation. It comprises a winery in the Rapaura district designed for small batch handling and approx. 8 ha of vineyard based on Sauvignon Blanc. Kate sources fruit from growers to supplement the production, and offers contract winemaking services for a number of clients. Assisting in the winemaking are Gillian Sutherland and Hugh Girling. Here, I review wines which are currently available.
