Stronsay – A Gibbston Chardonnay Story

10-Jul-2024

Not all heroes wear capes.

'Q' Belk and Sherry Thornburg, who have owned the Stronsay Farm in Gibbston for the past twenty years, did not wish the Gibbston church location to be subdivided and developed, so they took matters into their own hands and acquired the historic Gibbston church and the attached vineyard in 2018. Without previous viticulture experience, the couple quickly learnt that they had signed up for a journey of wine.

For the good deeds they did for the Gibbston community, the community showed up for them. Grant Taylor of Valli Vineyard, just across the road, offers advice and even a winemaker, Jen Parr, to make the wine, and friends and communities show up to help pick the grapes. It's a beautiful recipe for creating something good.

Vintage 2022 was favourable in Central Otago, a hot and dry growing season allowing excellent physiological ripeness. It is reflected in the wine with lush fruit and compatible with the balanced creaminess.

This single-vineyard Gibbston Chardonnay is available online and at The Church Cellar Door and Cafe on 2323 Gibbston Highway, it is served alongside Mt Edward wines from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
