Starborough ‘Single Vineyard’ Awatere Pinot Gris 2011

The Pinot Gris variety has turned out to be the shining star for grower James Jones and his winemaker Dave Clouston. For the ‘regular' Marlborough label, they have usually made a judicious blend of fruit from the ‘O'Dwyer's Farm' vineyard in the Rapaura with that from the ‘Starborough Terrace' site near Seddon in the Awatere. 2011 was a vintage that produced such distinctive and powerful fruit in the latter site that James and Dave decided to bottle a limited quantity on its own. This makes a wonderful comparison with the Marlborough wine which is 75% ‘O'Dwyers' and 25% ‘Starborough'. (Click here to read the review of the ‘regular' 2011 wine.) My review of the single-vineyard bottling follows.
