Starborough Marlborough Pinot Noir 2012

The 2011 Starborough Pinot Noir was the first vintage made from estate-grown fruit, the previous crops sold to another winery. The ‘O’Dwyers Farm’ vineyard in the Wairau Valley yielded a lighter coloured wine that possessed greater richness and weight than the colour suggested (click here to see my review). The wine found real favour overseas, such that most of that wine and the next vintage, the 2012, has been snapped up, mainly by the Australian market. A tiny amount has been kept for domestic supply, mainly for the Wellington on-trade sector. This 2012 release behaves in a similar fashion to the 2011, possessing more to it than initial impressions suggest. Starborough’s proprietor James Jones tells me there will be more of the 2013, made in a very similar style to the 2012. Here, I review the new and limited availability release 2012 wine.
