Stanley Estates Awatere Pinot Noir 2011

14-Sep-2012
Stanley Estates is the winegrowing venture of Bridget Ennals and Steve Pellett who purchased 11 ha of land in the Awatere Valley in 2003 following a holiday from the U.K. visiting family two years earlier. The operation is named after a Landrover vehicle ‘Stanley Rover' in which they travelled through Africa in. Stanley Estates now has 13.5 ha of Sauvignon Blanc, 3 ha of Pinot Noir, 0.5 ha of Chardonnay and have new plantings of Albarino (1.2 ha), Pinot Gris (2 ha) and Lagrein (1.0 ha), which includes vines from an established neighbouring block which they purchased in 2004, and a new block planted in 2005. Steve tends the vineyards with input from viticulturist Jeremy Hyland and initial winemaker was Jules Taylor. Eveline Fraser (ex Cloudy Bay) has taken over the winemaking role, making the 2011 Pinot Noir and the 2012 whites. From the beginning, the wines have won major awards both domestically and internationally. Here is my review of the new 2011 Pinot Noir. www.stanleyestates.co.nz
