With fruit sourced solely from the Gimblett Gravels, the Squawking Magpie Chardonnay consistently shows a deep core and sturdiness of structure and richness in its character. These are traits that make this wine a strong example of the power inherent in vinous expressions from this distinct sub-region. Proprietor Gavin Yortt has his original 4 ha ‘Woodlands’ site planted in 1995, and a further 20 ha planted in 2002 to draw fruit from. Whilst the Bordeaux varietals and Syrah make a major part of the portfolio, Chardonnay takes pride of place in the range as well. I review the 2010 vintage wine here, which shows a remarkable finesse. It is the best under this label from Gavin I have reviewed to date. www.squawkingmagpie.co.nz
