Squawking Magpie ‘Counting Crows’ Chardonnay 2015

16-Aug-2016
Gavin Yortt’s ‘Squawking Magpie’ wines seem to be spreading their wings. Gavin was one of the pioneers of the Gimblett Gravels district, and his reputation for excellence has been founded on wines from his vineyards there. Over the years, Gavin has sourced fruit from other regions to strengthen his portfolio, notably Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough. But now a series of Hawke’s Bay wines is appearing, which come from outside the Gimblett Gravels. It will be interesting to see how Gavin evolves and consolidates his wines and labels, so their provenance becomes clearer. It is undoubtedly a ‘work in progress’. One positive aspect is that the quality of the wines remains very high, regardless. Here, I review the new 2015 ‘Counting Crows’ Hake’s Bay Chardonnay, the fruit sourced from Dartmoor. www.squawkingmagpie.co.nz
