Spy Valley ‘Single Vineyard’ Marlborough Merlot/Malbec 2014

25-Nov-2016
In general, the red Bordeaux grape varieties are now consigned to the North Island growing regions. Even then, late ripening Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot are grown in carefully chosen sites to ensure sufficient ripeness to make the fruit of good quality with economic consistency. There are still plantings of the red Bordeaux varieties in the South Island, again planted in sites with the warmth to ripen the fruit to the required level. The preference for Merlot and Malbec is because of their earlier ripening among other factors. Those growing the varieties have something different if not traditional or classical in their portfolios to that of their neighbours. Spy Valley in Marlborough does well with their Merlot and Malbec blend for all the right reasons. Here, I review the 2014 vintage. www.spyvalleywine.co.nz
