Spade Oak – New 2013 and 2012 Releases

Steve and Eileen Voysey have seen a wide range of Gisborne vintages in their two decades-plus of growing grapes and making wine, none more different than the cool, slow-ripening 2012 and hot and dry 2013 years, which are near polar opposites. Viticulturists and winemakers new to the industry could be fazed by the extremes, but for those with experience will take it in their stride and made very good and consistent wine. Steve and Eileen admit 2012 was one of the most challenging, but in any year, there is high quality fruit, though the quantity may be limited. The 2012s from the Voysey’s ‘Spade Oak’ label have shown elegance, freshness and clarity. When talking about the 2013s, big smiles appear on their faces, and the wines are as good as they have ever made, in the styles they see as ideal. Here, I review a selection of 2013 and 2012 ‘Spade Oak’ wines, demonstrating the Voysey’s experience and skills, as well as innovative approach, which appears to be their calling card with their wines.
