The ‘Sopra Sasso’ is a new addition to his portfolio, and offers the individual Valpolicella Ripasso style at a very accessible price. The style is essentially Valpolicella, normally a lighter accessible wine from north-east Italy, supercharged in richness through the fermentation of partially dried grapes, rather than adding Amarone pressings. The wine comes from MGM Mondo del Vino, an Italian producer founded by Alfeo Martini, Roger Gabb and Christoph Mack , three oenologists selling all manner of Italian wines on the global market. Full, dark, deep ruby-red colour with black hues at the heart and some garnet on the edge. The bouquet is softly full and deeply concentrated with dense aromas of ripe, savoury black cherry, dark plum and mulberry fruit, along with a harmonious amalgam of dark herbs, earth and a hint of volatility. Medium-full bodied, the palate has rich and succulent fruit flavours of ripe dark-red and black cherry fruit entwined with dark plum and mulberry flavours, along with subtle notes of dark herbs, earth and raisiny elements. The fruit is sweet and vibrant, and builds to lend a degree of unctuousness and opulence. The fruit is supported by moderate grainy tannin structure with integrated acidity, and the wine carries to a plush finish. This is a rich and vibrant, near fulsome and opulent Valpolicella Ripasso, with ripe dark cherry, plum and mulberry flavours along with herb, and earthy detail and good structure. Match with roasted and slow-cooked game meat dishes, casseroles and hard cheeses over the next 5+ years. Bottled for MGM Mondo del Vino by Cantine Priocca. A blend of Corvina Veronese, Corvinone and Rondinella from Valpolicella, fermented with dried grapes to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months in oak. 18.0+/20 Feb 2018 RRP $25.00
