SOHO 2016 Peggy Sauvignon, Ziggy Pinot Gris and Harry Rosé

SOHO Wines was founded in 2009 by Rachael Carter, whose family has been involved in the New Zealand wine industry for over four decades. The family’s accumulated experience led to her philosophy of owning vineyards supplementing that with high quality contract fruit, and having three top winemakers involved, each specialising in their home regions. Rachael has instituted different ‘collections’, the ‘White Collection’ being the most accessible, the premium ‘Black Collection’, and super-premium ‘Blue Blood Collection’. To date, the SOHO wines have been very successful in wine shows and in the marketplace.

Rachael has now introduced a new range, which is called the ‘Generation Y Collection’, targeting the Y Generation, people born in the 1980s and 1990s who are the children of the ‘baby boomers’. Also known as ‘millenials’, they are seen as a sophisticated generation, and the most difficult to bring to wine. The new range is an on-premise only collection, the Y Generation clearly enjoying hospitality in on-premise situations. Here, I review the 2016 ‘Peggy’ Sauvignon Blanc, ‘Ziggy’ Pinot Gris and ‘Harry’ Rosé. The other wines in the range are ‘Betty’ Lower Alcohol Riesling, ‘Jonny’ Chardonnay and ‘Bobby’ Pinot Noir. All of the wines are from Marlborough and made by Dave Clouston, and are light and quite accessible.
