SOHO 2014 White Collection and Jagger Pinot Gris, and Stella Sauvignon

The Marlborough wines of Rachael Carter’s SOHO Wine Co. could arguably be seen as the engine room with all the most popular styles covered. Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir generally go under both the accessible ‘White Collection’ and top-end ‘Black Collection’ tiers. The fruit is sourced from the company’s ‘Jomara’ and ‘Yarrum’ vineyards in the Southern Valleys, the whites grown on the flatter land and the Pinot Noir on hill slopes, these supplemented with grapes from different sites in the Wairau and Awatere Valleys.

SOHO’s contracted winemaker for the Marlborough wines is Dave Clouston, who is a rising star, well-known for his own ‘Two Rivers’ and ‘Black Cottage’ wines, but also for his hand in a number of other high profile labels, particularly SOHO. Here, I review the new release 2014 ‘White Collection’ and ‘Jagger’ Pinot Gris, and ‘Stella’ Sauvignon Blanc. The vintage was one of two halves, the earlier ripening varieties and precocious sites fared very well, whereas the later varieties and cooler areas were affected by rain; and high yields needed to be managed. The wines show a creditable effort in vineyard and winemaking.
