Sileni Estates 2015 Priestess Pinot Gris and 2016 Cellar Selection Syrah

Traditionally a region to highlight Chardonnay and the red Bordeaux varieties, Hawke’s Bay is now an important producer of Pinot Gris and significant region for Syrah. Over the last decade, Pinot Gris has seen more than a doubling of the national plantings to near 2,500 ha, and Syrah nearly double the plantings to 450 ha with Hawke’s Bay a part of this growth, with around 450 ha of the Pinot Gris and 330 ha of Syrah, in the total of 4,750 ha for the region. Sileni Estates has welcomed both varieties into its portfolio of plantings and wines feature in the special ‘Estate Selection’ range as well as the accessible ‘Cellar Selection’ tier. Here I review the ‘Estate Selection’ ‘Priestess’ Pinot Gris 2015, and the new ‘Cellar Selection’ Syrah 2016.
