Sea Level 2015 ‘Home Block’ Nelson Chardonnay and Pinot Noir

22-Mar-2016
The Smail family established their vineyard at Mariri, opposite the Kina Peninsula, in Nelson in 2008 when they planted 8 ha of vines on the 14 ha site. Around half of the plantings are dedicated to Pinot Gris, and the remainder is a mix of Gewurztraminer, clone 95 Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Pinot Noir. While the Pinot Gris is made at the nearby Anchorage facility, the other wines are made at Whitehaven in Marlborough, where Sam Smail is the chief winemaker. The wines are stylishly elegant and contemporary in style, and consistently show well at judgings. Here, I review the new release 2015 ‘Home Block’ Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. www.sealevelwines.co.nz
