Sculptureum 2013 The Rodin Blend and Cezanne Syrah

The Sculptureum is the wine venture of Sandra and Anthony Grant, both barristers based in Auckland. The Sculptureum Vineyard is on a 10 ha property on Omaha Flats Road, Warkworth and is the former Hyperion Vineyard, purchased 10 years ago. The Grants took out the Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Gris, leaving around 0.5 ha of the original Chardonnay, which they have expanded. The Grants began a programme of replanting, and there are now 4 ha of Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Carmenere, these vines now around 5 y.o. The vines are on the hillside of the property, and the Grants have developed an ‘Art Garden’ adjoining the vineyard with a variety of sculptures, rocks, art pieces and fixtures. The viticulture is overseen by Mark Rawlinson, who has been working with the Grants for around 8 years. Tony Prichard is the consultant winemaker, who works with Richard Robson of the nearby Matakana Estate, where the wines are made. 2012 was the first vintage of the Sculptureum wines, which are yet to be released. The quantities at this early stage are small, with less than 600 cases total made, but this is projected to grow. Here, I review the new 2013 wines, ‘The Rodin’, a Bordeaux-varietal blend and the ‘Cezanne’ Syrah. They are seriously constructed and should age well.
