Schubert 2015 ‘Marion’s Vineyard’ and ‘Block B’ Pinot Noirs

30-May-2017
Kai Schubert and Marion Deimling settled in New Zealand from Germany with the vision of making world-class wine in 1998. They immediately purchased a small established vineyard in Martinborough and set about planting their main 12.5 ha ‘Marion’s Vineyard’ in East Taratahi, near Gladstone over 1999 and 2000. They now produce 6,000 to 8,000 cases annually from 80 to 90 tonnes of fruit annually, in their winery in Greytown. In many ways, they have achieved their dream, as their flagship Pinot Noirs, the ‘Block B’ and ‘Marion’s Vineyard’ from the East Taratahi site are deemed to sit amongst the best Pinot Noirs made in this country by many critics. I certainly see the extremely high quality in the wines too..

The Schubert Wines reputation is known around the world due to the very active marketing by Kai Schubert who travels the globe extensively to see the wines placed in the best hotels, restaurants and stores in the world. While Kai is away, Marion tends the wines and works with their vineyard manager Stefan Innes and the Hoskins of ‘Vine Managers Martinborough’ to ensure their vines are in the best of health. Schubert Wines gained BioGro organic certification in 2013. Here, I review the new release 2015 ‘Marion’s Vineyard’ and ‘Block B’ Pinot Noirs. The wines are from an excellent growing season, and they consistently show their inherent style, the ‘Marion’s’ wine more ‘feminine’, and the ‘Block B’, made from a selection of Dijon clones, a more ‘masculine’ style. www.schubert.co.nz
