Saint Clair Wairau Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2015

Saint Clair operate a grading system where the best parcel of Sauvignon Blanc produced becomes the flagship ‘Wairau Reserve’ label. It is a little unusual in that in any given year, the wine may originate from a different source. This is different to the system where a vineyard has been designated the best, this usually determined by performance over many vintages, and also different to the process of blending components from different sites to make the best and most complete wine possible. Each method has its proponents and positives, the Saint Clair system allowing a different site to shine each time. This can be confusing for consumers who crave consistency, but can be extremely exciting for those who look for something novel each year. Here, I review the newly released ‘Wairau Reserve’ Sauvignon Blanc, the fruit from old vines from a site in Dillons Point.
