Saint Clair ‘Vicar’s Choice’ and ‘Premium’ 2013 Sauvignon Blancs

02-Oct-2013
As one of the leading producers of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, Saint Clair’s releases are awaited with much anticipation as the wines serve as benchmarkers for the region. The house style is one of up-front, punchy fruit that more often than not showcases the thiol-influenced characteristics of pungent passionfruit and tropical fruits. This generally reflects the vineyard sources and the skilful winemaking that allows these aromas and flavours to be expressed with clarity. Of course, Saint Clair have a tiered system of wines as well as great breadth. The ‘Vicar’s Choice’ and the ‘Premium’ labels are the most affordable and most accessible. While they may not have the individuality of the ‘Pioneer Block’ wines or the power, concentration and richness of the ‘flagship’ ‘Wairau Reserve’ wines, these have consistency and are generally the most drinkable and popular in the market. They are the advanced guard of what is to come from Saint Clair. Here, I review the new 2013s. www.saintclair.co.nz
