We tend to think of Saint Clair as a top Marlborough producer, but their purchase of an established vineyard on Omahu Road in the Gimblett Gravels in December has changed the scope of the brand. The 10.4 ha ‘Plateau’ vineyard, has Syrah, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Viognier, the vines between 12-17 y.o. The fruit is sent down to Marlborough for vinification. Already, a number of top award winning wines have emerged from the site. Here, I review the 2015 ‘Premium’ Viognier and 2014 ‘Pioneer Block 17’ Merlot. www.saintclair.co.nz
