Saint Clair 2013 Gimblett Gravels Malbec and Syrah

In December last year, Saint Clair announced the company’s purchase of a vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels district of Hawke’s Bay. Best known as a producer with wines from a diverse range of sites and sub-regions in Marlborough, Saint Clair has released over the years a number of Hawke’s Bay wines, sourcing fruit from the now-acquired vineyard. The purchase expands the portfolio of styles under the Saint Clair brand and enables a consistent supply of Hawke’s Bay fruit and wines. The 10.4 ha vineyard, off Omahu Road, Twyford has Syrah, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Viognier, the vines between 10-15 y.o. The vineyard is managed by Murray Hill, and the fruit is sent down to Marlborough for vinification, except for the Viognier which is dejuiced in Hawke’s Bay first. Here’ I review two 2013 vintage wines from this Gimblett Gravels vineyard under the ‘Premium’ label.
