Sacred Hill 2013 HALO and Virgin Chardonnays

13-Jun-2014
While Sacred Hill is highly respected for its quality across the whole range of wines it produces, many wine lovers and critics would say that Chardonnay is its star variety, the ‘Riflemans’ wine arguably one of the very finest in New Zealand. Winemaker Tony Bish is not shy about his particular passion for the Chardonnay grape and his track record in making outstanding examples is truly enviable. Across the board, the Chardonnay wines from Sacred Hill deliver plenty for their aspiration, style and price. Tony has been keen to explore the different facets and expression of the variety, and in 2011 produced the ‘Virgin’ Chardonnay, from super-premium ‘Riflemans’ vineyard fruit in the challenging un-oaked style. I appreciated its pristine nature, rating it 5-stars (click here to see my review). The 2013 vintage in Hawke’s Bay is now seen as an outstanding one. Here, I review two Sacred Hill Chardonnays from this year, one under the small parcels ‘HALO’ label, and the ‘Virgin’ moniker. www.sacredhill.com
