The ‘Russian Jack’ brand originated as a secondary tier to operate under the Martinborough Vineyard, ‘Te Tera’ and ‘Burnt Spur’ labels. It was named after Barrett Crumen, a well-known swagger or ‘gentleman of the road’ who walked and worked in the Wairarapa and in Martinborough. Born in Latvia, many thought him of Russian origin, hence his nickname ‘Russian Jack’. A statue celebrating his life was erected in Masterton. Under the Foley Family Wines ownership, the Russian Jack wines will no longer be exclusively Martinborough wines, but will include Marlborough expressions, and it may be developed into a stand-alone brand. Here, I review the latest releases, a 2014 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and 2013 Martinborough Pinot Noir. www.martinborough-vineyard.co.nz
