Ruru Central Otago Pinot Gris 2016

07-Oct-2016
Lucienne and Roland van der Wal purchased an established 20 ha vineyard on Airport Road, Alexandra in Central Otago in 2012. The property is now called the ‘Immigrant’s Vineyard’ named for the van der Wal’s Netherlands origins. The vineyard is planted to 15.5 ha Pinot Noir, 4 ha Pinot Gris and 0.5 ha Gewurztraminer, and 90% of the fruit is contracted out. However the van der Wals make a small amount of wine under their ‘Ruru’ brand, named after the Maori owl, numbers of which can occasionally be seen around their vineyard. They have engaged Antony Worch of Alexandra Vintners to make the ‘Ruru’ wines. Here, I review the 2016 Pinot Gris. www.immigrantsvineyard.co.nz
