Rockburn Wines – A Current Selection

Rockburn is one of Central Otago’s most successful and efficient operations. Originating in 1991 as a 3 ha ‘hobby’ vineyard at Lake Hayes for Richard Bunton, the company that Richard chairs now has 9 ha of Gibbston and 33 ha of Parkburn vineyards. The wines were labelled ‘Hay’s Lake’ until 2002 when the ‘Rockburn’ brand was introduced. Winemaker Malcolm Rees-Francis joined as winemaker in 2005, and he designed the new winery complex at Ripponvale Road that became operational in 2015. Industry veteran Rebecca Poynter has recently been appointed general manager, and no doubt will enjoy the strength and continued growth of the company. The wines are consistently among the top performing of the region at wine shows, and Malcolm is clearly keen to push the boundaries with styles. Here, I review a selection of current releases, from the secondary ‘Devil’s Staircase’ tier to the limited edition ‘Nine Barrels’ Pinot Noir.
