Riverby Estate – Showing Sauvignon Blanc Diversity

21-Feb-2013

Riverby Estate is the boutique wine estate label of the Matthews family with siblings Simon, Sali and Christine having shares in the property on Jacksons Road owned by the family for over a century. Next door neighbours to Cloudy Bay, vines were established in 1989, and all of the fruit was contracted to Collard Bros. through the 1990s. Nowadays, there are over 70 ha planted to Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Semillon, Syrah and Gruner Veltliner, and the vines are amongst the oldest in Marlborough. 2012 sees the 14th vintage release of Riverby Estate wines, and there will be 13 different wines in the range. The wines are made at Forrest Estate, with Simon having overall responsibility for the winemaking and viticulture. Kevin Courtney, who is married to Christine Matthews looks after the logistics, sales and marketing. Riverby Estate has enjoyed considerable show success and critical international acclaim for the wines, and the family is proud of the diverse range produced. Here I review three very different expressions of Sauvignon Blanc from the Riverby Estate vineyard: one pure and varietal, one blended and oak influenced, and one with massive botrytis infection. www.riverbyestate.com
