Renato 2014 Pinot Gris, 2013 Pinot Noir and Merlot

21-Apr-2015
Renato Estate is the Nelson boutique winegrowing business of Renat Nussbaumer who established 8 ha of vines on an 11 ha section on the Kina Peninsula in 1999. His family in Switzerland have been growing wine since the 1970s and his connections with Burgundy led to a focus on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Nussbaumer also has Pinot Gris and Merlot planted on the clay-based gravelly soils, and he sources Sauvignon Blanc from neighbouring vineyards to complement his range. The first vintage was in 2003, and while around 50 tonnes are harvest annually, only a portion of the fruit goes to the Renato label. All the wines are creditable, but the Pinot Gris wine has proven to be particularly successful in shows and reviews. Here, I review the new 2014 Pinot Gris, and 2013 Pinot Noir and Merlot. www.renatoestate.co.nz
