Redmetal Vineyards 2016 Rosé and Albarino

05-Oct-2016
The Redmetal label of Grant and Sue Edmonds is undergoing a renaissance with some very interesting new developments in their Maraekakaho vineyard near Hastings, and increased marketing work over the last several years. The Edmonds have cropped Syrah since 2009 from the 6.5 ha site that was originally devoted to Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and the wines look to be excellent and strong examples of the Bridge Pa Triangle district style. With the 2016 vintage, they have their first rosé wine, made from Cabernet Franc following a brief hiatus after the 2012 vintage. Also new from 2016 is the first commercial bottling of Albarino from second crop vines, the first crop minuscule, resulting only in a few bottles for family and friends' consumption. The vineyard is tended and wines made by Bron Davies, wife of Nigel Davies, the white winemaker at Sileni Estates, with input from both Nigel and Grant Edmonds. Here, I review the 2016 Rosé and Albarino. www.redmetalvineyards.co.nz
