Redmetal Vineyards 2013 Merlot and Syrah Releases

The outstanding 2013 Hawke’s Bay vintage has been the growing season that Grant and Sue Edmonds have waited for to restart their Redmetal Vineyards label. Grant and Sue are confirmed Merlot and Hawke’s Bay people and their Redmetal label was established to showcase what could be done with hands-on viticulture and winemaking with the variety grown in the red metal gravel soils west of Hastings, in the district now designated the ‘Bridge Pa Triangle’. A number of superb wines have been released over the years since the inaugural 1996s. Since then Grant’s role as chief winemaker at Sileni Estates has taken precedence in his efforts, and the Redmetal brand has quietly continued, under the radar, offering those in the know some delicious drinking. The heady days of the late 1990s may never quite be repeated, but the Redmetal brand has everything for a renaissance.

I visited Redmetal Vineyards at the start of 2012, when the experienced ex-Sileni winemaker Nigel Davies returned from sabbatical to take over the vineyard and winemaking duties (click here to see my report). The 7 ha vineyard has had some Syrah top-grafted, first cropping in 2009, and the ratio of varieties is now 65% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Franc and 6% Syrah, in accordance to what Grant and Sue see reflects the international and domestic trends and demands for Hawke’s Bay reds. Nigel has recently returned to Sileni, and his wife Bron has taken over the vineyard and winemaking duties, with some expert help from her husband Nigel, and Grant. The wines are made on site at Maraekakaho, and the 2013 vintage is one that Grant and Sue Edmonds and the Redmetal team are very pleased with. I review the wines here. They show a crowd-pleasing house style and sophisticated oaking.
