Redmetal 2015 Merlot Franc and 2014 Basket Press Syrah

03-Jun-2016
It is inspirational that Grant Edmonds finds the time to continue to develop his and his wife Sue’s personal Hawke’s Bay wine project Redmetal Vineyards. As chief winemaker at Sileni Estates, his responsibilities must be considerable. Nigel Davies, winemaker with Sileni came from a European sabbatical in 2012 to take over the running of Redmetal, but he too, was drawn back into the fold at Sileni Estate, as white winemaker. Nigel’s wife Bron, who is fully versed in viticulture and winemaking has assumed the responsibility at Redmetal, and with input from Nigel and Grant, has made the wines on site since 2013.

The 6.5 ha vineyard on Marekahaho Road neighbouring Sileni Estates has changed slightly, with Merlot vines up to 24 y.o. making up 65% of the plantings. 7% is devoted to Cabernet Franc and there is 22% Syrah. 5% of the plantings are Albarino, which yielded a minuscule crop in 2015. The Redmetal label looks pretty interesting with three successful vintages in a row, these being 2013, 2014 and 2015.
