Moderately deep ruby-red, even colour throughout. The nose is gently full, with aromas of black fruit, herb and delicate spice. Medium-bodied, aromas of cherry and plum entwined with thyme, mocha, vanilla and cinnamon. The mouthfeel is smooth with dusty tannins; concentrated fruit layers with spice and flows along a lacy acid line to a satisfying finish. Throw back last week, I visited Donald @moko.hills in Bendigo, Central Otago.
An elevates site planted in 2017 on clay over gravels and carbonate calcium, with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay overlooking Lake Dunstan. A few more varieties were planted this year, including Gamay, Syrah. Viognier and Cabernet Franc.
So far, two vintages of the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir have been released, and they are stunning and memorable.
Donald has great vision for his vineyard and land, a very exciting new producer in Central Otago. Definitely one to watch!
