Quest Farm 2014 ‘White Silk’ Pinot Gris and 2012 ‘Red Silk’ Pinot Noir

31-May-2016
Quest Farm is the wine renaissance project of a Central Otago Pinot Noir vineyard by Mark Mason, one of the founders of Sacred Hill Wines. Mark purchased a 145 ha farm in the foothills in the Lowburn district in 1999 and close planted 8 clones of Pinot Noir (these being 5, Abel, 10/5, 667, 777, 113, 114 and 115) over 18 vineyard sites on the farm. There is 1 ha of Pinot Gris, plus a little Gewurztraminer and Viognier planted. The vineyard is managed by Mark and his partner Michelle Crawford, and the wines are made using local facilities. Future plans include the building of a winery on-site. The range of Pinot Noir wines has grown to include variations of the theme with ‘Grand’ and ‘Single Vineyard’ bottlings, rosé wines supplemented by a Pinot Gris. Here, I review the 2014 ‘White Silk’ Pinot Gris and 2012 ‘Red Silk’ Pinot Noir, wines from what Mark calls a ‘Sideways Project’, the wines destined for alternative distribution channels. www.questfarm.co.nz
