Quarter Acre Viognier 2013 and One Off Pinot Noir 2012

29-Apr-2014
A craftsman must have the opportunity to indulge himself. It gets the creative thoughts and juices flowing and inspires greater things. Rod McDonald is a wine craftsman who has gradually realised his dream of his own winemaking concern, and now runs a busy operation making a diverse number of brands under his own Rod McDonald Wines umbrella as well as making wine as a consultant. With all this going on, I see his ‘Quarter Acre’ and ‘One Off’ labels as his indulgences. The ‘Quarter Acre’ wines are the serious and sophisticated ones which show his art and craft, Rod’s dream wines. The ‘One Off’ releases are unique releases that are made from opportunistic situations. The former are clearly part of a plan, while the latter are serendipitous, and unlikely to be repeated with any regularity if at all. Here, I review two wines which must be indulgences, one under each label. www.rmwines.co.nz
