Quarter Acre Hawke’s Bay 2014 Chardonnay and 2013 Merlot/Malbec

27-May-2015
The quarter acre section and a house on it has been the Kiwi dream. It’s this sense of one’s own place that inspired Rod McDonald to name his premium wines ‘Quarter Acre’. The wines come from vineyards that he deems as being representative of his home of Hawke’s Bay, and they are crafted to show the varieties are indeed at home in the region. The Quarter Acre Viognier and Chardonnay come from the coast, and the Sauvignon Blanc more inland, but at altitude. Rod also draws more Chardonnay and the reds from Havelock North and Maraekakaho. There’s a cross-section here, but quite a picture of what Hawke’s Bay can offer. Here, I review the 2014 Chardonnay from the coast ‘Doc’s Block’ and the 2013 Merlot/Malbec from the Havelock North vineyard. www.rmwines.co.nz
