Pisa Range Estate 2013 Riesling and ‘Run 245’ Pinot Noir

15-May-2014
Warwick and Jenny Hawker were among the earliest grapegrowers in the Pisa district of Central Otago, establishing their vineyard in 1995. Their 33 ha of vineyard is on both the hillside terrace as well as flatter land. The terrace plantings are the oldest, the ‘Black Poplar Block’ producing especially successful wines. The plantings on the flat block have the younger vines including 1.5 ha of Riesling that yielded its first crop in 2012. The younger Dijon clone Pinot Noir vines, around 10 years old, also on the flat block, produce the ‘Run 245’ Pinot Noir label. (Click here to see my reviews of last year’s releases.) Here, I review the new 2013 Riesling and ‘Run 245’ Pinot Noir, made by Rudi Bauer, who has been the Hawkers winemaker from the start. The wines are very consistent with the earlier releases. www.pisarangeestate.co.nz
