Peter Yealands 2016 ‘Estate’ and ‘Reserve’ Sauvignon and Pinot Gris

03-Oct-2016
The 2016 vintage in the Awatere Valley may be a little more favourable for Sauvignon Blanc than in other Marlborough sub-regions which show full ripeness, but also softer acidity. Wairau Valley winegrowers and winemakers in particular needed to manage their vineyards to retain freshness and blend parcels appropriately to have the wines show vibrancy. The Awatere Valley wines generally tend to show cooler characteristics with zestier acid and greater minerality, so a warm and dry vintage such as 2016 can benefit the wines from this sub-region. From my tastings, Pinot Gris seems to have prospered a little more than Sauvignon Blanc in Marlborough in 2016, many wines showing an exotic fruitiness. Here, I review the 2016 Peter Yealands ‘Estate’ and ‘Reserve’ Sauvignon Blancs and Pinot Gris from the Awatere Valley. www.yealands.co.nz
