Petane Station 2014 Viognier and 2013 Syrah

Petane Station is the boutique Hawke’s Bay winegrowing venture of Philip Barber and his family. Philip is a second generation grower who grew up in a vineyard in Huapai. The 8 ha vineyard situated at Eskdale in the Esk Valley is made up of 5 blocks, the ‘Church Block’, established in 1999 with 3 ha of Pinot Gris, ‘Tracks’, established in 2009, with 0.3 ha of Viognier, ‘Hau Hau’ in 2011 with 1 ha of Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer, ‘Bellbird’ also 2011 with 0.2 ha of Gewurztraminer, and ‘Puriri’, established last year with 0.5 ha of Chardonnay. The Barbers launched their own label in 2011 to considerable acclaim, with top awards on the show circuit. Philip makes the wine and has been working with Ant Mackenzie since 2010, formally as consultant winemaker from 2013, using the Askerne winery facilities. www.petanestation.co.nz
