Penny's Hill was established by Tony and Susie Parkinson who purchased land for grapegrowing in the foothills in east McLarenVale in 1988. Vines were planted over 1991 to 1996 with a narrower than usual row spacing. The ‘Penny's Hill' vineyard covers 18.4 ha, and the company also has 15 ha of vines at the ‘Malpas Road' vineyard and 10.5 ha at the ‘Goss Corner' vineyard. Viticulture is to the care of David Paxton and Toby Bekkers, and the highly regarded Ben Riggs is the winemaker. In 2005, Parkinson and Riggs amalgamated their wine businesses and brands to form the Galvanised Wine Group, which produces and markets ‘Penny's Hill', premium McLaren Vale wines with their distinctive ‘red dot' label, ‘Mr. Riggs', wines made in the Ben Riggs style, ‘The Black Chook', a Shiraz/Viognier blend of McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek fruit, and ‘Woop Woop', which are ‘out there Australian wines. The wines are elegant and stylish, and have a growing presence in New Zealand. They are distributed by Federal Geo in New Zealand. www.pennyshill.com.auwww.federalgeo.co.nz
